What I want from Tweeples in 2010 – That means you!
UncategorizedPublished December 29, 2009 at 2:14 pm 34 CommentsTwitter kinda summed up a lot of 2009.

There wasn’t any earth shattering product announcements, no conference that changed the way we look at the world entirely and no single thing that got as much discussion or produced as many “lists” as twitter did. We (for the most part) didn’t know what we were doing or how it should be done. We were learning as we went and were making a lot of mistakes in the process. But you know what? At least we were trying! We’ve had a year to get this under our belts – we’ve seen each other make mistakes, have some amazing wins and be really annoying at times. We’ve watched as people struggled to figure out just how much they were and weren’t comfortable sharing and others determine if they were comfortable on it at all. We’ve seen pictures of cats and kids and dogs in sweaters. We’ve watched romances blossom…and fizzle. We’ve built networks and relationships of people that are equally as geeky as we are. And honestly, we’ve had a lot of fun doing it.
But now, its time for us to move on a little from our tweeting adolescents….So I ask - what was your role in 2009? Were you an influencer, educator, connector, friend, entertainer, voyer or just noise in the background?
Ok, honestly, I don’t really care what your role was in 2009 – Focus on your role in 2010 and read some of my suggestions:
Here are my top 10 resolutions for all the tweeters I know:
- People – DO NOT put “Please RT” in your tweets. If it is interesting, I will RT. If it is interesting and you ask me to RT, I won’t cause that’s just how I am.
- The authenticity debate ends. No one is actually authentic unless you see what they do in their own house all alone when no one is watching. You are who you are.
- #FF AKA #FollowFriday will actually have different people every week. I get it, you have friends on twitter. What else you got for me?
- People start RT’ing more frequently. If you see something great – RT it – it might introduce us to someone we don’t know.
- Don’t just tweet a link. It makes me angry. I want to know what I am going to be looking at.
- Stop the stupid “influencer lists” Everyone is influenced by different things – who are you to tell anyone else what they are influenced by
- Engage people. Its simple – but talk to people that follow you on occasion. You’ll be surprised what you may have in common.
- Meet people offline. Believe it or not – there are still these things called phones. Apparently some people even have them that aren’t cellular. I think they are called boomers.
- While we are on that topic, Can we get over the generational issues debate on twitter? Unless of course you are part of the #genYunconference
- You will send me brownies from @ftbrownies or other goodies – cause these last few weeks have been delish
PS. Don’t stop being personal and sharing all the fun things that I really do love! I kinda secretly do like the kitty pics.

I like the kitten pics too!
Shh…That is a secret. Luckily for me, people don’t really read my blog other than the 10 people I pay to and someone that was accidentally looking for a picture of the fail whale.
I want to see my cats on an influencer list in 2010.
Your cat will make an influencer list before I do #fact
I also want you to add a SHARE THIS button to your blog. How am I supposed to share this awesome post? Fine, I’ll manually use a URL shortner and cut + paste the URL to Twitter.
My 2010 wish? I want everyone to make sh*t easier to share. One-click sharing. My dream.
Laurie – You tell me how to do that and I will add it. I am a geek but I am not a technically advanced one.
Ask thelance. He does my blog and makes it look fancy.
I tweeted him. PS. This is my favorite picture of you.
Lance rules…. the end
Finally a Twitter list that I read the whole way through! When I first hit the Twitter scene I was all about Gen Y and proving everyone stereotypes wrong, yeah I am over that. It got boring. Let’s hope the in 2010 we can stop talking about Generations and instead actually *do* something worthwhile. (Sorry that was a bit of rant).
Anyways, solid list. Great writing style. Good luck on the brownies!
Jennie – Thanks! You have a really cool site – are we connected on twitter?? I started out w/a blog called Gen Y’d – I got bored with it too…I’m doing a GenYUnconference this spring to make some plans on what we will actually “do” in the world worthwhile other than bit*h about boomers…..Anyway. I wish myself luck on brownies as well.
I like it! Great post Sarah!
Let’s connect more in 2010!
Shennee Rutt
YES!! Absolutely! (and Thanks!)
1. Ok.
2. I am.
3. Haven’t #ff’d in weeks
4. I already do.
5. Deal w/ it (sometimes)
6. I never make any lists. I have to make up my own! (not)
7. I try to.
8. I already do.
9. Never really bought into the gen thing. Peeps are peeps.
10. I want people to send me Zingerman’s corned beef!
Happy new year!
Amen to #6. Kinda getting sick of what is clearly (in many cases) just self-referential back patting by a circle of friends.
And would you be cool with homemade marinara sauce as a goodie?
Thanks for sharing!
I am totally cool with any food as a goodie. Italian, Mexican, Brownies, Peanut Brittle, Apples, Cheez-its….Yes those are all things that I have gotten in the mail in the last 6 months….Yum!
Love this list. Great post Sarah!
Thanks Mark!
#GenYunconference holla!
I agree with you on the please RT. I’ve done it to help get a few votes for a contest I was in, but I won’t do it for my posts. I certainly won’t RT something if it asks me to. Unless of course, it would be for a good cause. Something charitable might actually get me to RT.
This is a great list of suggestions, but I will curse you if you bring an end to “influencer lists” before I’m named to one.
I want them to end cause I never make it on them. If they end, I can always assume I would’ve been on the next one. Ahh…see totally sound logic!
Love it Sarah! Amen. Now, onto our #genYunconference …
We have more in common than you ever would have guessed – brownies included.
Karla – We always kinda knew we had a lot in common I think….Now, on to the important stuff… http://www.brownies.com they have the BEST brownies ever – they should pay me, seriously…but instead they just make kick a$$ brownies that keep my gym in business.
Rick & Kelly – The #genYunconference and #knockthesegenYsocksofftweetup is alive and well and in full swing of preparation- we need to jump back on the wave to hammer out a few details and then the website can go live. So excited to have you both involved!!!
Love this post! And I would not laugh as much without Laurie’s kitty tweets & pics!
Can I also add – anyone who talks about “rules” on twitter needs to quit it! There are no rules…but your own. Live them, breathe them, adhere to them…but don’t share them…I don’t care about your “rules” nor should you care about mine.
Looking forward to tweeting, facebooking and hanging out in real life with you in 2010!
Leanne
Please add the “share this” button, listen to mama Laurie. Besides, that makes huge difference from an Information Optimizer (that’s me !) ‘s perspective. Now I am gonna have to ask people to RT this great post to engage great people, seriously, can I do it?
Excellent and timely. And thanks for killing off the whole generational bullsh*t.
I thought we had covered that in diversity training, but clearly a lot of folks missed the session about the stupidity and dangers of stereotyping. That said, this brazen hussy loves the way in which Twitter/blogs strip filters and let the person through. Hope to see you — as in 1st life — in 2010.
Love it and I promise to continue the kitty posts. Just try and stop me. ; ) / =^.^=
GREAT post, Sarah. Call me on the phone anytime – SOME of us boomers have cell phones.
I can get you bacon but not brownies. Daughter leaving for MKE and she’ll deliver for me.
I’ll trade you a Sweet Mandy B’s cupcake for a return appearance of your old twitter pic.
As 2009 went on IMHO Twitter became more and more about self serving noise, self promotion and pointless mutual congratulation and less about decent conversation. Lets hope that changes in 2010 and we get back to the type of networking and discussions that made it so good this time last year
Very nice
